Trinity Squash Becomes Second in the Nation!

The Trinity Women’s Team after their final against Harvard

I want to make an update about the Trinity Squash Teams because both teams had an incredible performance that deserves some attention! I play for the Trinity Women’s Squash Team and these past two weekends both the women and the men have had their national championships. It has been an incredible season, and both teams have put their blood, sweat and tears into playing the National Championship. The Women’s team was ranked number one after an undefeated season, and the men’s team was ranked number 6 going into the nationals. However, the men had the advantage of playing at home.

First out it was the women. The team managed to beat Yale in the first round 9-0. The second round was a bit tougher against UVA, the number 6 ranked team who had an upset match against Drexel at number 4. Trinity fought to the very end and they ended in the final against Harvard. In season the girls had won 7-2, with a lot of tough matches. It was no given Trinity was going to win, however, the pressure was there. Upenn was packed with alums, parents and players from other teams wanting Trinity to win, but mostly Harvard to lose. The Trinity Women played amazingly, they fought with everything they had. The tension was so strong one could feel it in the air. After 7 matches, the score was 4-3 to Harvard and number 1 and 9 was left to play. We had to win them both. We did not expect it to be this close, but we still had hope. Trinity’s number 1 did a great job pushing, but Harvard was too strong. The whole team was heartbroken, but we still managed to keep our heads high and support each other. I have never met a group of girls like this and even though we lost, we still came second. And honestly, I would not want to lose or win with any other team.

This weekend it was the men’s turn. They were ranked number 6 and was the underdogs of the tournament, no one believed they would get further than the first round. However, in the first round they managed to beat the number three seeded, Princeton, 5-3. This was the first upset, and the boys played amazing. They were just happy to be in the semis and to have beat their ranking. In the semis they met Upenn, the number two ranked. The Trinity courts were packed with people cheering for the Men’s team. It was enough screaming and support to give everyone chills. The boys had shifted gear, they had decided that they were going to the final. They pushed through and won the match 5-4. The unbelievable had happened, the number six seed was in the final playing Harvard. No one could believe it, not even the boys themselves. However, if they had won over Upenn, they could definitely win against Harvard too. They went in with an incredible push, the whole match they looked like they were going to win. It was incredible to watch the guys play some of the best matches they had ever played. Everyone on the team and everyone outside in the audience believed that they could win. In the end, Trinity had some very unlucky matches. Two of the players had match ball in their games, and it really looked like they were going to take the win home. However, the same happened as in the Women’s match, they lost the close matches. It was devastating.

However, we cannot forget that both teams had an amazing performance, and that they both came second in the country. Next year the Women’s Nationals will be at home at Trinity, and we will do anything and everything to win!
