Russians are Protesting too

In the light of the horrific war initiated by the Kremlin against Ukraine a year ago, there has been Russian voicing their opposition and gathered in the streets of over 100 cities all over the world to protests against the war happening. In the rest of the world the war is known as the Ukraine-Russia war. Although in Russia, Putin and the government have decided to call it a “special military operation” instead of war. The news Russians are receiving is controlled by the Kremlin who’s spreading false information about Ukraine shelling their own cities, and Russian soldiers being praised as liberators. It is hard for the Russians to find credible and true sources, which is why it is why a lot of Russians stand with Putin. However, many Russians living outside of Russia who read the uncensored news sent by the rest of the world, are against the war and many people protest the situation. Some places in Russia there were also protests “mostly by people laying flowers or stuffed animals at monuments dedicated to Ukrainian historical figures” (Macfarquhar). As the Russian government are very strict about Russian supporting the country in the war, people that are against the war or have open protests will be arrested or hurt. The government does not want the truth to come out, which it is so important to cover as much as possible so that some real news can end up in a Russian home. Even though a lot of Russians stand behind Putin, many are against him too. They are against the aggressive war, and many hope that the end of the war means the end of Putin’s regime so both Ukraine and Russia can be free.
