Poland Opens Their Border for Ukrainians

Poland has for many years been a narrow-minded country, especially to foreigners. However, they are now the number one country to take in Ukrainian refugees. They have welcomed nearly 10 million people running from the war in Ukraine, despite their messy history with the Ukrainians. One Polish citizen, Ryszard Marcinkowski talks to the New York Times about how he grew up being told horror stories about the Ukrainian Nationalists. Nevertheless, when the war started, and all the refugees started to gather at the Polish borders, he was there to deliver food and other supplies. Despite the prejudices he had towards Ukrainians, he understood that it was more important to look past his opinions and help the people in need. The Polish people have also understood that this war might not end tomorrow, it can take years before the Ukrainian people can return to their country. Most importantly because the war needs to end, but also because big parts of the country is already in ruins and it will not be built back up any time soon. Poland is now looking to help the Ukrainian people with more than just shelter. The country is integrating the people into schools, workplaces, and long-term living spaces. Kids are being recruited in sports and other outside of school hobbies to make them feel more like home. If Poland can set aside the prejudice they have against Ukrainians and realize that these people need more than just shelter, the rest of the world can too.
